Off-Road Vehicle Prohibition in Effect

Cooks Ferry Indian Band members are advised that, effective immediately (Aug. 10, 2026), the use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) for recreational purposes is prohibited on Crown land throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.

The prohibition has been put in place due to ongoing wildfire activity across British Columbia and elevated fire danger conditions in many southern regions of the province. The measure is intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and help protect public safety.

What is prohibited?

Effective immediately, the recreational use of off-road vehicles on Crown land is prohibited, including:

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs)
Motorcycles and dirt bikes
Side-by-side vehicles

In addition, all on-highway vehicles must remain on established road surfaces as defined under provincial regulations.

What areas are affected?

The prohibition applies to Crown land throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.

The restriction does not apply to:

Private land
National parks
Emergency response activities
Agricultural operations
Commercial or industrial users operating vehicles for business purposes

Why this matters

Wildfires have a direct impact on our communities, affecting homes, cultural and traditional-use areas, wildlife habitat, air quality and access to important community resources.

As fire danger increases, even a single spark can have serious consequences. Restricting recreational off-road vehicle use helps reduce potential ignition sources and allows firefighting resources to remain focused on existing wildfires and emergency response efforts.

We encourage all members to do their part by respecting current restrictions and helping prevent human-caused wildfires.

Duration of the prohibition

The ORV prohibition will remain in effect until 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on Oct. 9, 2026, unless rescinded earlier by the BC Wildfire Service.
