Cook's Ferry Indian Band Health & Wellness Department is pleased to offer the Elder-Led Nlaka'pamux Arts & Cultural Learning Program, a unique opportunity for community members to learn traditional arts, cultural teachings, language, and land-based knowledge directly from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, artists, and cultural practitioners.
This intergenerational program supports the preservation and revitalization of Nlaka'pamux culture through hands-on workshops that strengthen cultural identity, wellness, creativity, community connections, and traditional knowledge transfer.
Participants will have opportunities to learn traditional harvesting practices, cultural protocols, basketry, leatherwork, sewing, woodworking, stained glass, music, storytelling, and land-based teachings while building relationships with Elders and fellow community members.

Cedar Harvesting & Preparation
Learn about the cultural significance of cedar, traditional harvesting protocols, root gathering techniques, sustainable harvesting practices, and cultural responsibilities connected to caring for the land. Through Elder-led teachings, storytelling, discussions, and a cedar show-and-tell sharing circle, participants will explore the traditional and contemporary uses of cedar while gaining a greater understanding of stewardship, respect, and reciprocity.
Silver Willow Picking
Learn about the cultural significance and traditional uses of silver willow while spending time with Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Participants will learn respectful harvesting practices, cultural teachings, and the importance of harvesting materials in a sustainable way.
Silver Willow Necklace Workshop
Learn traditional Nlaka'pamux teachings related to cultural values, spiritual wellness, community responsibilities, Participants will transform harvested silver willow into a meaningful handmade necklace while learning traditional techniques, creativity, and cultural teachings connected to natural materials and personal expression.
Sewing a Star Blanket
Participants will develop sewing skills while creating a star blanket and learning about the cultural significance, symbolism, and importance of handmade items in Indigenous families and communities. This workshop encourages creativity, patience, and cultural pride.
Sewing Workshop
Participants will create a Canyon Coyote, Farmhouse Apron, or Reversible Crisscross Apron while learning sewing techniques, fabric preparation, and project construction. This hands on workshop encourages creativity, skill development, and community connection through shared learning experiences.
Spiritual Activities & Cultural Protocols
Learn traditional Nlaka'pamux teachings related to community values, cultural responsibilities, ceremony, smudging, traditional protocols, and spiritual wellness. Participants will engage in storytelling, reflection circles, and discussions with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
Woodworking Workshop
Learn safe tool use and woodworking skills while creating practical and culturally meaningful projects. Participants will work alongside instructors while gaining confidence in woodworking techniques and hands-on craftsmanship.
Leatherworking Workshop
Participants will learn traditional leatherworking techniques while creating functional and culturally significant projects. Activities will include cutting, stitching, decorating, and finishing leather items while exploring their cultural significance.
Beading a Poppy
Participants will learn beading techniques while creating a beaded poppy. This workshop provides an opportunity to honour Veterans and explore the significance of remembrance, service, and community through artistic expression.
