Updated: Jun 7

Cook’s Ferry Indian Band (CFIB) is proceeding with the demolition and site reclamation of the Widow Smith House, following the identification of hazardous materials that require specialized handling and disposal.

Why This Demolition is Happening

CFIB’s priority is protecting community members, workers, and the surrounding area.

A pre-demolition survey was completed by a third party and found asbestos-containing materials and lead in paint/coatings in multiple parts of the building. These materials can pose risks to health and safety if disturbed without proper safety precautions.

The Project

CFIB has hired a qualified contractor to properly dispose of the hazardous materials prior to the full demolition of the building. The contractor will follow strict processes, applicable regulations, WorkSafeBC requirements, and environmental best practices.

Safety and environmental precautions, such as restricted access to the area, dust control measures (including wet/water methods), and waste management will be followed throughout the project to ensure our community stays safe.

Anticipated schedule (weather dependent):

  • Asbestos removal: February 12–23, 2026

  • Demolition and site work: February 24–March 23, 2026

What Community Members Can Do to Stay Safe

  • Respect site fencing, signage, and restricted access during the project

  • Keep children and pets away from the site

  • Expect construction traffic and activity during scheduled phases of work

If you have concerns about the project or questions about the safety and environmental precautions being followed, please contact CFIB.
